Good Morning 2012. See you on the hill. Burton pants and jacket

    Pretty Pink Pants…

Today I walked into the Snowboard Connection in Seattle looking for a new pair of snowboard pants. It was time to put my solid black 1995 Wave Rave Gore-Tex pants out to pasture… Sad, sad, sad…. But anyways, I walk over to the girl/woman’s section and all I see is a pastel and floral field of vomit inducing colors. So I head over to the Bro section and grab a couple pair of men’s pants in black, navy and orange…. Yes I said orange. As I walk over to the dressing room a friendly sales shredder comes over to inform me… “those are men’s pants, and will not be flattering on you. You should try the women’s pants, they come in great colors like pink and purple.”. I know he was doing his job, but I just looked at him and said, “you’ve got the wrong girl… I’ll stick with these.”

I’m pretty sure he was shocked because the male dominated sports industry has taught him that girls want pink, they need to look pretty at all times (even when sweating) and their pants must make their ass look like a million bucks. But that’s just not me. When I started snowboarding, I was the only girl In my all male snowboard gang. If a girl came around, it was usually a girlfriend or a little sister, someone you HAD to take care of that “rode like a girl” and I wanted no part of that. I never wanted to be defined by my gender but rather by my skill. I didn’t want the guys to slow down because I was scared or because I couldn’t keep up, I just wanted to be thought of as one more snowboarder.

When I started riding this was easy because the industry didn’t have “womens” versions of anything… They just had “snowboard gear.” Yes, I have been mistaken for a guy before on the hill. Now they have pretty pink pants, and purple boots and snowboards with flowers and poetry. But I don’t want all that, I just want to blend with the crew and ride. And if I’m good, I’m good and if I suck it’s because I do and not because I’m a girl. Being a girl in sports shouldn’t be a handicap, but I think it’s always been treated that way… And the pink pants are a bullseye I’m just not willing to wear.

Let my jump off my soupbox and finish packing. I’m off to Whistler B.C. in the morning…. Yah!
